How are you progressing in managing your finances in Israel? Banking in Israel generally takes place in Hebrew. On the one hand, this makes sense since Hebrew is the language of Israel. However, this can create some difficulties for those Olim who do not speak, read or write Hebrew. Yes, all three skills are necessary in order to stay on top of your banking and finances.
There are a number of tasks that demand that one is able to communicate with the staff in the bank. This can be:
- reading and understanding your bank statement
- reading and understanding any letters that come from the bank
- communicating with the various staff members in the bank
- carrying out online banking including seeing your statement, doing transfers, making payments
- writing checks
- depositing checks directly from your cell phone
- using the various services at the machines. Mostly one can find someone from the bank to assist with this but not always
Money management is an important skill for successful living. What do you do if you are unable to complete the above-mentioned tasks independently? If you have a relative or friend that you trust, you can turn to them for help. Some of these services you might obtain assistance from an accountant or bookkeeper. But what happens if you do not have an accountant, bookkeeper, relative or friend?
If you are a native English speaker, our service can assist you. This service draws on my training in occupational therapy combined with my husbands Hebrew skills. For those who are not aware, occupational therapy is all about assisting our clients to be independent in all areas of their daily life. This includes such tasks as shopping, banking, money management, organization skills, time management and more.
Our focus is for you to be as optimally independent as is possible. Where it is possible to teach basic skills combined with perhaps a visit with you to your bank, we are happy to do so. For those who require regular assistance, we are happy to assist. This can be on a monthly basis or when the need arises.
